The Chamber of Commoners (not to be confused with the Powell River Chamber of Commerce) is the heart of Powell River. Our community, non-profit, and other people-based groups are coming together to talk with each other and to exchange information and views in an informal setting.  The Chamber of Commoners is a social gathering, not a meeting. Join us!

Chamber of Commoners FAQ

Why are we the Chamber of “Commoners”?
In old England land shared by all in the community who needed it was called “the commons.” Those who used it were “commoners.” Today, the commons refers to all things we share: music sports, visual arts, media, land and public services.

Who is sponsoring this event?
There is no formal organization and no hidden agenda behind this event. The event is being convened by an ad hoc group of ‘commoners’ ... Trish Cocksedge, Janet Newbury, Paul Schachter, Denise Reinhardt, Meghan Hildebrand, Murray Dobbin, Ellen Gould, Tony Colton, and others. David Parkinson circulated the invitation on the Slow Coast blog. The list keeps growing and that’s kind of the idea. The hope is to have three or four of these events a year: an upbeat venue for involved people to be able to mingle and share for some time. We’re hoping it takes on its own identity and that others will want to be part of the planning and organizing of the next Chamber of Commoners get togethers - which may look very different from this one, who knows?!

What is the agenda?
There will be light food (free), an open cash bar and music. There will be lots of time for mingling and interchange. There will be an opportunity for organizations make brief announcements to the group gathered ... and because it’s so close to Valentine’s day we’re going to have ‘Organization Speed dating’ where we all have a chance to mix and chat one -on-one. The idea is to see where we might have interests and ideas in common, in order to able to make connections in terms of the work we’re all doing.  Mostly, the idea is for it to be a pretty casual good time with a focus on Powell River initiatives. We’re also offering space for info tables if people want to promote their initiatives that way.
